‘Shining’ (샤이닝) is a song from the 6th official album ‘Ashes to Ashes’ (2006) of veteran Korean rock band Jaurim (자우림).
Like most of the songs from the band, Shining was also written and composed by Jaurim’s vocalist Kim Yoon-ah.
According to an interview, Kim Yoon-ah said that Shining didn’t garner much attention when their album was released back in 2006. She said it was only years later, especially with the struggling younger generation, that sadly people really started relating to the song.
The lyrics to Shining sound like a person who is somewhat lost, afraid, and even confused in the midst of an existential crisis. Anyone who can relate to the flurry of emotions one feels in those moments might find Shining rather cathartic as it sounds like their own story, or might find it consoling as it can sound like another person telling you you’re not alone in going through such trying times.
Note: The translation below is based on my own interpretation of the lyrics and is not an official English translation of the song provided by the artist.
Translated Lyrics to ‘Shining’ (샤이닝)
Someday not now, somewhere not here
Would there be a place that accepts me
Even if I don’t try to hide my empty soul
Would there be someone to hold me
The sun is burning over my scorched heart
Would I too have wings to fly away
The sky is so beautiful full of stars
I’m just standing crying like a fool
When would this storm inside me die down
I’m standing alone in a cold world
Doubts that can’t be cleared, questions that have no answers
Would there be something that completes me
Lonely without reason, suffering from living
Would there be someone to hold me
The sun is burning over my scorched heart
Would I too have wings to fly away
The sky is so beautiful full of stars
I’m just standing crying like a fool
When would this storm inside me die down
I’m standing alone in a cold world
Someday not now, somewhere not here
Would there be a place that accepts me
